Jurgen Klopp urges Liverpool fans to cheer Trent Alexander-Arnold off the pitch as manager and defender hit back at critics after stunning free-kick against Rangers

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp ensured Trent Alexander-Arnold got a hero’s ovation during the 2-0 victory over Rangers on Tuesday night.

The right-back, who has been criticised for his defending in recent weeks, netted a stunning free-kick to put the Reds in front.

Alexander-Arnold did not play a single minute of the last international break and there are doubts over whether the 23-year-old will be included in the England squad for the upcoming World Cup.

After a timely reminder of his attacking qualities, Klopp made sure Alexander-Arnold got the morale boost he needed with a late substitution.

Klopp was seen gesturing to the Kop End of Anfield to clap the defender off the pitch after replacing him with Joe Gomez in second-half injury-time.

And after defending Alexander-Arnold last week, Klopp once again hit back at his player’s critics after the match.

“He played a good game, defensively especially, and wonderful goal,” said Klopp.

“We had a defensive problem, our timing was not right, we take risks in our defending, everyone knows that and these gaps are often on the back of Trent but not because of him.

Alexander-Arnold’s creative talent has never been in doubt

“He has to track back. We were not in the perfect moment so we had to adjust. It was a wonderful goal, what can I say? It is not long ago he scored but I am happy he had that still in his locker.”

And Alexander-Arnold had his own message for those questioning him.

The defender said: “People say things but I come out and perform for the team.

“It’s been a slow start to the season for me but I’m looking forward to the rest of it.”
